Action Assignments For A New Life and Body:The Goal
I always will believe that a good trainer, no matter on what level, demand of their clients 24/7. Change takes change. You either want it or you don’t. My clients aren’t perfect, they are people, and life happens. That being said, no one, no trainers around me have a success and completion rate that can touch mine. All my clients lose and the majority of them finish and enter into maintenance. They also excel far beyond that becoming trainers, self employed, change careers, and re-examine their life and way of living overall. They step outside of what they have known their whole lives. They battle the fears and regrets for long enough to see that they don’t just want mediocre. They want to step outside of that box they have made for themselves, hell, they want to run from it.
Why? I am good but am I really that good? Why do I do?
I don’t do anything, it is what I ask of them to do for themselves. This isn’t about ripped abs or skinny thighs. This isn’t about getting laid or finding a handsome husband. This is about being the best you that you can be, at any given moment in your life. This is about demanding of yourself nothing short of excellence. Yes, love, money, career, sex, and security are things we want but this means little if inside you aren’t the person you want to be. I ask them to give the best of themselves and the few times they might not have it in them I ask for it again and louder. Are you doing that to yourself?
The real question is, what does a diet have to do with self esteem? The answer is everything and nothing. It isn’t about a diet, it is about the dedication to yourself and health. It isn’t about deprivation, it is about self control and your inner strength. Last, but not least, it is about trust. You have to trust yourself and silence fear and self doubt. You have to trust the science. Remember, fat loss, building muscle, and health aren’t opinions. There is a science to it, there is a process and you have to silence all the doubt and wrong in the world and only hear the fact and correct.
The question now is, how do you start? How do you jump into that change?
One way is this first of Action Assignments. The purpose of these are to get you to share, in whatever form is assigned, your steps in working towards your new life and body. It may seem overly simplistic, but I assure you, these little daily steps can lead to big leaps.
Today your assignment is The Goal. Very simply, but very detailed, you need to answer the following questions in the comment box. This does not have to be about fat loss, but it does need to be about your body, life, and your hopes for the future. This may be a small corner of the world but I promise you it will be read and it will be taken in, even if only just us.
Note: You don’t have to leave your real name or email, just get it out regardless.

1-What was your goal one year ago?
Get under 200 lbs
2-What is your goal now?
Get to 10% bodyfat even if just for a day
3-What is your biggest barrier for that goal?
Its getting harder to lose the weight
4-What is your best asset?
September 23rd, 2008 at 2:44 amMy dedication and the fact that i only work 6 hours a day with the rest dedicated to my goals
Missy
1) My goal one year ago was to lose these 5-10 lbs of fat, mainly from my belly and lose jiggly stay puft marshmallow arms
2) Pretty much the same, but I want to feel strong and energetic too. I don’t want to be sitting at work and “feeling” the rolls of my stomach spilling over my scrubs. I don’t want to worry about eating a few extra calories and having it ruin my day, week, etc. I don’t want this to control me.
3)Probably me, but also lack of having greatest trainer Leigh live nearby!
But no plan and no motivation stop me alot b/c I hate trying to figure things like this out on my own (I have a tendency to go to extremes) with no outside knowledgeble intervention or instruction (someone there to say, no no you don’t do deadlifts in running shoes standing on bosu ball…)
4)Asset? Honestly, every one I think of, I can counter with a reason why it is not! I really don’t know.
5) November 1 - learn the basic moves from my kettlebell instruction DVD when it gets here.
When I first began reading this morning, it made me even madder that I don’t have a good trainer near me!!
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:50 amSinead
Missy, you can do this. Even if you can’t find a good trainer nearby, maybe you could work with one online. I bet Leigh could hook you up with some names…
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:38 amSinead
Mine is a little different right now than it would have been two weeks ago, but here goes.
1-What was your goal one year ago?
to lose 80 lbs
2-What is your goal now?
To be healthy throughout this pregnancy and then refocus on healthy eating and weight loss once the baby comes. Eventually, my ultimate goal is to have a body like Jessica Biel–slender but strong.
3-What is your biggest barrier for that goal?
at the moment my goals have been sidetracked by a surprise pregnancy, but that’s ok. I think that the biggest barrier is that I have so much to lose, and I know that it’ll be tempting at times to give up just because of the distance that I have left to go. I’m not going to give in to that temptation, though.
4-What is your best asset?
my new knowledge and determination. Now I understand the science of weight loss and exactly what I need to do to get this weight off. The month before I got pregnant proved it to me–10 lbs came off super easy, and it wasn’t water weight loss, either. No matter what, I WILL reach my goal…slow and steady wins the race.
5-List one date and one short term goal that you will achieve and when you will achieve it by.
I’m aiming to keep my pregnancy gain to 20 lbs this time. It was less than that the other two times (I actually lost with my 2nd daughter), so that should be a pretty do-able goal. By July 2009, I’m planning to get back into weight loss.
Thanks for the article, Leigh. I’m not surprised that your clients have had such success!
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:44 amMissy
Thanks Sinead! You are a real encouragement! Hey maybe that is my asset- I have made encouraging online friends!!!

You’re pretty determined, too!

1-I wanted to have a rock hard body. I don’t care how shallow it seems, it is what I want. I want a new life.
September 23rd, 2008 at 1:06 pm2-I still want it but I am close to it, now having lost 24 pounds.
3-Biggest problem would be my hunger or giving in to my hunger.
4-My education and sites like this that keep it real.
5-I will see the top of the abs by the end of Oct.
Leigh Peele
Ruben-Sounds like you are prime and set up for those goals. Since your work is so short make sure too much time isn’t spent sitting around and lowering daily activity. An extra walk here or there might help.
Sinead-You are going to rock it no matter when you start.
Missy-I will admit it is a lot easier with help BUT you can go at it yourself. Always fight that urge for everything to “be in place” before starting a program.
September 23rd, 2008 at 4:14 pmLeigh Peele
Tara-Thanks for the compliment
Good luck on hitting that goal.
RG-Sounds like you need to things two be your priority. Sleep and Sleep
Rachel-Make sure you don’t wipe yourself training for two highly aggressive goals. Best of luck!
September 23rd, 2008 at 4:16 pmLeigh Peele
Tim-Congrats on the amount lost so far. As for the hunger if you haven’t really write down and track what you eat. 9 out of 10 you can find a pattern that can help with the hunger on a nutritional level or at least make it easier.
September 23rd, 2008 at 4:17 pmSinead
Thanks, Leigh!
September 23rd, 2008 at 4:18 pmChris
1-To get down to 225lbs from 260 and get clean (I am currently at 203 and still clean)
September 23rd, 2008 at 5:24 pm2-I want to get to single digit body fat
3-The fact that I’m bored with dieting. It’s getting harder to eat clean, even if its 90% of the time
4-My stubbornness and my ability to push myself beyond what I know I can do.
5-I will be single digit body fat by my birthday, March 2. I am starting a new strength program and my short term goal is to increase my deadlift by 50 lbs by the end of the program.
Lori

4. Assets - determination, i love to cook, eagerness to learn and try new things
5. To go down one pants size by November 1
Melissa

September 23rd, 2008 at 6:07 pmRachel
Oh Leigh, I should clarify that the marathon was last year. It’s done and behind me…along with all those miles of running!
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:32 pmMissy
Thanks Leigh; I am just so anal about wanting to do everything “perfect” and in my mind it all has to be in place before I start or I just end up going in circles trying to do things myself!
September 23rd, 2008 at 10:19 pmRuben
Thanks Leigh!
Going to the gym twice a day sometimes, going on 1-2 hour bike rides pushing the pace, doing pushups and pull ups randomly between household chores, but i listen to my body if i feel overly tired or sore and scale back a little and sunday is a DEDICATED rest day, at least during football season
September 24th, 2008 at 1:49 amI’m actually probably on the opposite side of that more into the overdoing it
Ben
1-What was your goal one year ago?
–Continue rehabbing a blown hamstring back to full health and start incorporating prehab work into my training. Oh yeah, and stop running so freaking much (bad Q-angle + distance running = chronic/overuse injuries).
2-What is your goal now?
–Body-as-a-single-unit strength and conditioning improvements, overall athleticism, 50 push-ups in a row, single-arm pull-up, and (pending UNC Charlotte board of trustees’ approval) possibly re-enroll as an undergrad so as to tryout for football at age 34 (will need to add roughly 30-50lbs of lean mass and drop my 40yd time significantly).
3-What is your biggest barrier for that goal?
–Time.
4-What is your best asset?
–I didn’t think that was one of the “services” you offered. Seriously, though, single-mindedness to a fault, in the context of achieving those goals.
5-List one date and one short term goal that you will achieve and when you will achieve it by.
September 24th, 2008 at 8:48 am–Get better at something, probably during my workout this afternoon.
RG
Sleep would be nice, but realistically it seems unlikely.
September 24th, 2008 at 8:56 amThe next month is going to be stressful at work, and that’s not really avoidable.
Having gone through this particular work-stress, I can say that the only things that help the sleep are carbs and alcohol; eating right and exercising help the stress but not the sleep - and don’t result in an extra 10 pounds.
Kathy
1-What was your goal one year ago? To tone my body for visible muscle definition.
September 24th, 2008 at 9:18 am2-What is your goal now? To reduce my body fat so that maybe you can actually see the muscle without me have to flex it.
3-What is your biggest barrier for that goal? Being able to plan my meals in advance. I do good for the first few days of the week, but by Wednesday I’m scapping to find something. So I either have to go out to eat (I don’t necessiarly know what is best) or I skip eating all together and sabotage any progress that I’ve made.
4-What is your best asset? My youthful appearance, even though I am a half century old.
5-List one date and one short term goal that you will achieve and when you will achieve it by. March 5th. I hope to be at 15% or less body fat. Actually I don’t really know what I am now, so by October 6th I hope to have a session scheduled to measure my current % of body fat.
Lex
1-What was your goal one year ago?
106 lbs/18% BF
2-What is your goal now?
106 lbs/18% BF**
3-What is your biggest barrier for that goal?
Self-sabotage?
4-What is your best asset?
It’s telling that I cannot think of one.
5-List one date and one short term goal that you will achieve and when you will achieve it by.
October 24, 30 days, 4 interviews and a new job.
October 24, 30 days, 112 lbs/20% BF
**I’ve had this goal for at least three years running and cannot make a dent in it. I have maintained, and the goal is realistic, but I cannot move out of what must be my comfort zone.
September 24th, 2008 at 12:06 pmCandice

September 24th, 2008 at 2:50 pmLose 60lbs

3-What is your biggest barrier for that goal?
I really like to eat food. I enjoy food. I even have my own baking blog and belong to a weekly baking club. But I will say this, I no longer emotionally eat. Talk about triumph!
4-What is your best asset?
That I’ve made a habit out of calorie counting. I’ll be honest that on weekends I probably just mentally monitor what’s going in and out. See number #3. But come Monday I just start thinking about cals again and it runs through the week.
5-List one date and one short term goal that you will achieve and when you will achieve it by.
I want to be 170lbs by October 30th. I’m currently 182 and I think it’s a realistic goal although I am going to need to seriously buckle down and structure the next five weeks.

To strengthen my abs and tighten my waist to below 30″ where I seem to be stuck.

5-List one date and one short term goal that you will achieve and when you will achieve it by.

Lori-Not having a partner sucks. I actually have an article coming up about how to workout alone, so stay tuned for that. In the mean time, what we can’t control in the gym, we can try in the kitchen. Pick those battles!
Melissa-You got me there I like to eat too.
Ben-That would be freaking stud to try out for the team, seriously.
September 25th, 2008 at 4:51 pmLeigh Peele
Kathy-Two Words. Bulk Cooking.
When I am short on time and stressing out I little find one day off and cook and cook my ass off. Added to that remember, every restaurant, every one, has a salad.
You want it, go for it, even in those moments of weakness.
Candice-Congrats on figuring out those barriers and keeping it real.
Lex-How about that best aspect is you willingness to self educate and try and solve the problem rather than ignore it? Because that is what you are doing here, right now.

ETANA FINKLER
1-What was your goal one year ago?
To lose 30 pounds from 180 to 150 and have healthy eating be natural
2-What is your goal now?
a. My current goal is to be effective in fat loss from 167 to 145, quickly; to be done with living in deficit; to learn to support fat maintenance and muscle strength, while accepting the physical challenges of my aging (62).
b. My goal is to continue exercising in good commitment and spirit with whatever happens with my physical limitations (foot disability or foot surgery).
c. My goal is to find greater goals to accomplish than having on my gravestone: “here lies Etana who successfully dieted…” through art and/or social change.
3-What is your biggest barrier for that goal?
I think my biggest barrier will be if I need foot surgery, which may limit deficit calories for 2 months, and may limit/modify exercise for 1 to 2 years. If I do not have surgery until next year, perhaps I can reach goal weight in 3-5 months, and be lighter on my “foot” if I’m using crutches for 2 months.
4-What is your best asset?
My best asset is perseverance; when I fall I get back on as soon as possible, and I keep going and going. I learned this in step aerobics!!! Miss a step=no problem! Pause for 10 seconds; I might want to stop; worry or complain about what I’m doing, and I can lose my way for months. I can have faith and commit 95%-98% (I am committed to action, not perfection). I lose faith when I get no results for months and months.
5-List one date and one short term goal that you will achieve and when you will achieve it by.
I will finish REPAIR by Oct 19 at no more than 3 pounds higher than I began it (173 +3), and I will finish Metaburn 12 weeks later, by January 11, having lost 12-15 fat pounds, to 161, by weighing my food and hitting my macros and exercise as the program is written; not doing MY program, but doing the Metaburn program. I’m pretty excited about this. I believe in the science of it.

2-What is your goal now?
Exactly the same.
3-What is your biggest barrier for that goal?

Mari
1-What was your goal one year ago?
My goal one year ago was to finish school – a degree in business – by May 2008.
2-What is your goal now?
My goal now is to lose weight, lots of fat, so that I can have a baby. I have PCOS and so the excess weight has a infertility effect (not sure if I’m explaining correctly).
3-What is your biggest barrier for that goal?
Biggest barrier to that goal is me. I feel lost and overwhelmed with having to lose so much weight.
4-What is your best asset?
My best asset is that I’m a great student and I learn quickly. Physically, my best asset are my eyes.
5-List one date and one short term goal that you will achieve and when you will achieve it by.
September 30th, 2008 at 9:16 pmMy short term goal is to go through my pantry and throw out all the food that is not good for me. And then go to the store and re-stock my pantry with better food so that I can try and make healthy meals. I hope to achieve this by end of October.

1-What was your goal one year ago?
September 30th, 2008 at 11:00 pmI was a month postpartum, so it was to get down to my pre-pregnancy weight by any means necessary (starvation, purging, etc.)
2-What is your goal now? To build strong lean muscle mass, achieve a healthy weight and work towards entering a fitness competition.
3-What is your biggest barrier for that goal? The scale, eating the required calories, cutting back on cardio or upping the calories to compensate.
4-What is your best asset? I am VERY strong willed.
5-List one date and one short term goal that you will achieve and when you will achieve it by. I will continue eating and working out according to plan and will NOT look or care what the scale says when I weigh in with my trainer on Thursday.

You guys didn’t think I didn’t see you there did I?
Cynthia-I have horrible hair.
Love you answer.
Etana-I assure you that your gravestone will NOT read that.
Hollie-See you are looking at the pizza thing all wrong. If I were you I would keep eating all the pizza before they get a chance and then they wont give you anymore

Ankit-That is an aggressive goal, I like aggressive goals.
Tonya-Those weekends are killers. I say everytime you want to eat, try and do a pull up instead
Shari-I have nothing to add. Stress and choc win everytime.

Natalie-It is cause you want to wear some skimpy costume isn’t it. You can tell me. You want to be the Halloween “nurse.”
Jordan-Calories counting doesn’t have to happen. More so you just have to understand that they matter. How you manipulate their intake is another ball game. The key is knowing that process. Once you get that, then you can find your best path through it.
Mari-I am really glad you listed your eyes as your best asset. Totally my favorite part on the body

Sarah-Just took a look at your blog for a sec. Strong willed indeed.

The problem is, sometimes our greatest asset can also be our worst enemy. It’s this strong will that has worked against me, as well. But I’m choosing to use my powers for good, not evil!

1. Goal 1 year ago. Not totally sure. My biggest recollection from a year ago was dealing with our year old dog who was sick with a brain infection. My biggest personal goal was probably to lower post meal blood sugars.
2. Current goal. weight/fat loss. Long term goal 150lbs, shorter term under 200.
3. Biggest barrier. I’m the queen of moderation. There are times that a little more effort and a higher rank in my priorities is required to accomplish my goals and it’s too easy for me to get sidetracked or to settle for good enough.
4. Biggest asset. I’m the queen of moderation. Just like most things in life there’s always the flip side to the coin, pros and cons. I always have plan b, c, d, and e and can roll with life’s punches. There are times in life that making a better choice is actually better than making the best choice.
I think another asset I have is in recognizing that rest/recovery is just as important and appropriate as working hard. Not to be critical but when I read in a fitness forum something along the lines that “I just fell down 5 flights of stairs and broke 18 bones in my body, How do I keep up my weight training while I’m in a body cast?” I just want to scream. I so do not understand how somebody so fitness oriented could ever possibly think this could be a good idea. Hello, take a fricking break from training and let your body heal!!!!!! That’s the best training plan for the acutely sick or injured or overtrained. (Rant over. Sorry if I stepped on any toes not my intention.)
5. Current short term goal. Improve my tracking/logging of food for October. I was just reviewing my Sept summary in Crosstrainer and I didn’t log or only partially recorded 8 days out of the month. That’s 22 days I did good but I want to do better. I think the problem is that Crosstrainer is a new program for me and therefore still needs customization and if I don’t find a food in the data base I’ll skip over it intending to make the custom entry later when I have time. Later doesn’t always come in this instance plus if too much time lapses I know I won’t remember everything. The solution is simple actually although distasteful to the computer/techno geek I am. Plan: Paper and pencil.
