Big Meal Challenge Updates

If coming in late to the blog today there was a normal posting update that can be found here…
Breaking the Dogma of Meal Timing
Alright guys, here is who I have so far of you that are participating. If I missed you then please let me know. Obviously, next time I do something like this I will get a forum set in place, but since this is just 30-days of fun I figure the chaos is fine for the time being.

1200 calorie Beef and Broccoli Cheese Quesadillas… I bought the corn tortillas for this, looking forward to this and other recipes. Today has been good but I think too much acid in my stomach from the canned tomatoes of my chili.. but it was nice to not be bothered about “what should I eat now?” I also have a headache coming off my REPAIR refeed week which was a bit junkier than whole foods.
I started thumbing through my Eating For Life cookbook and I think I could make recipes from there.
Leigh, why 1 gallon of water? I’d been drinking 64 oz, so this is a big jump. I think in FLTS it would depend on how much exercise I’m doing, so if I’m doing less, I should drink a bit less?
Glad to see the group with our links. I think this could be relaxing emotionally once I have about 10 recipes I like.
thanks, Etana

Way to go everyone! What a great group!! Thanks for the links–I’ll have to go cheerlead.
Etana, I’m sure Leigh will answer the water thing, but in FLTS she says that women should aim for a gallon but drink at least 1/2 to 1 gallon of water. I thought I was drinking a lot of water before (several liters a day), but I was still having some of the signs of water retention that Leigh mentions in FLTS. Once I upped my water intake to 1 gallon a day, those water retention signs went away and I was losing again. Sure, I was restricting calories, too, but I think that the key for at least part of the loss was getting my water right. Oh, and at this time I was just walking and doing a lot of NEAT (right before I got pregnant). If I were you I’d really really try to get a gallon of water in a day. You might be surprised at the change. I’m sorry about the headache. Hopefully you’ll be feeling better a day or two away from the refeed.

Hi Leigh ~ I can’t wait for the recipe, Etana keeps bringing it up and I can’t get it out of my head! BTW, you have me switched with Debbie in the photos, but I WISH that was my before.

I am clueless on how to link anything – I do good to email my pics to Leigh!! But that is fine – I will send a check to St. Judes in honor of the winners
October 20th, 2008 at 8:54 pmI already support them when I can and this will be a good excuse.
Can’t wait for those recipes!!
Cynthia
Like the rest, looking forward to the recipe! Love quesadillas!
Etana, you may find you feel better drinking the gallon of water… I’ve been doing that for a while now, and I don’t need to use as much moisturizer. I am also less congested than I was. I was having some troubles with my left eye going dry… again, that problem stopped when I started getting in my gallon daily. Serious workout days I drink more like a gallon and a half!

Hi guys just a brief note as it’s late. My hubby took some pics. Link below. I don’t have everything all together but it’s a start. I’ve made 4 Big Meals in 2 days and they are weighed and portioned out for the week. Maybe not really big meals as Leigh laid out but batch cooking instead? Anyway more later. So far all food prep has been done once daily with the exception of treating hypos the last 24 hours. Even with that still came in ok with calories though. Anyway more later.

When you are on the page you want shown, copy the url (the address in the top bar that starts http:// … copy that whole line with “Edit-copy” or control-copy (pc), command copy (Mac). Then go to the message here or wherever you want that link shown, and paste the “url/address” that you just copied.

Shari, good start on posting the pics. I bet you’re going to see some nice differences in 30 days!
Missy, you got the pics link posted! I bet the OBM will help you, too!
Etana, good for you on posting the pics. How’s the ankle doing? What was your OBM today?
Diana, Anna, and Debbie, good for you on getting the pics up, too! I look forward to following your progress!
Diana, the best part of posting pics is that you know that the pics will look better next month.
Good for you for getting started with the challenge!

How’s the ankle doing?
I went to surgeon yesterday, so of course today it does not hurt. I see second surgeon 10/31. Basically, I do not need surgery if I want to be totally sedentary for the rest of my life. Many “older people” choose this option. If I have surgery it is pretty much foot reconstruction and the surgeon made light of it; after I left I had a funny feeling about how simplistic he made it sound.
>What was your OBM today?
Monday I had chili turkey, beans, canned crushed tomato
Today I made the weird SWEET POTATO BREAKFAST CASSEROLE invented on the fly by Joy8030, using turkey and adding 1C frozen spinach.
I feel I’m not eating enough vegies, and I have a SPLITTING headache and backache all day that aspirin didn’t help, but I think I’m crashing from the sugar/wheat I ate on refeed week. Going home to sleep right now.
Down 2pounds already from the refeed week; glad to be counting, measuring and eating clean again. Next time I do a refeed, I’ll ask for some coaching first, or maybe a candy-police buddy to see me through it.

Cynthia, nice blog! You’ve inspired me to set one up for this challenge. I just need to go back and write some stuff in it!
http://debbys30dayflcobm.wordpress.com/
I can’t wait to try out some big-meal recipes, but for tomorrow I’ve already broiled a bunch of burgers – and chopped some veggies. I just have to do some weighing and put everything together on one shelf in the fridge.
Good luck everyone!

Etana, were you asking me about my ankle? Funny you asked it’s been a little sore today. I fell yesterday and my R knee and lower leg and Left shoulder took the brunt of it. I have no idea how the shoulder got involved as I fell on my R side. I kept waking up last night as it hurt to lay on either side. Feels a bit better now though. I’m also feeling quite a bit better today also.
Cynthia I took a quick look at your blog and enjoyed it too.

Etana, I think I’d not feel so good about the surgeon making light of such major surgery, either. Is there any way you could get another opinion? And I’m with you–I wouldn’t choose sedentary for the rest of my life, either!
When you did your refeed, how much water were you getting? Was your sodium way high, too? I wonder if that’s part of it, too. I hope that the headache goes away soon. Headaches drive me nuts (and I get them regularly). Good job on being down 2 lbs already!
Nice blog, Debby!
Diana, ouch! That sounds sore! I hope you’re feeling better tomorrow!
Everybody is doing well so far! Keep up the great work! I can’t wait to see what The Great One (that’s Leigh) has in store for us tomorrow!

Yes, scheduled for 10/31 week from Friday.

I think there was no water (2 cups?). Regarding salt: only ice cream & candy no salt; indian food was probably very salty, Calif Tortilla steak fajitas was probably salty… As I said, I see that for my next week long refeed, I will have a buddy to report to and a plan, and a discussion about refeed.
REFEED: Physically the need is to increase calories way up, with macros being 25%pro, 20% fat, 50% carb or such
EMOTIONALLY: if it means I’m taking a break from 12 week clean deficit with few or no cheats, and then going into another 12 week deficit, there is a need (for me) to have icecream, chocolate, and restaurant meals… I think I’ll move this discussion over to JP Fitness and start a thread..
signed so y’all know who wrote this. hint hint..

Etana, good that you are getting another opinion! Sometimes you just have to look into things. I wouldn’t want the sedentary option for the rest of my life either.
Leigh… your warning about not hurting ankles is probably way too late for me. Seems to be a trouble zone for me. I sprained mine over and over again as a child. Then, after college, managed to sprain BOTH ANKLES AND MY LEFT FOOT SIMULTANEOUSLY! That was bad… fortunately, I’ve only managed minor sprains since. They are a really weak point though. Seems like all my “underpinnings” are. But I will try not to mess them up during the challenge, LOL!
Etana, On the emotional impact of a refeed, boy, no kidding! I’ve been eating mostly clean since October 2006, and until I recently started the “Cheat To Lose” diet by Joel Marion, I had no idea just how much a “no rules” refeed day could affect me mentally. It is wild though! I do it, I don’t measure, count, record, worry about protein grams or veggies or anything and it feels GOOD! And then the very next day I’m back on low carb and no cravings. Honestly, I didn’t have any strong cravings even on my “cheat” day, which was Monday. I worry a bit how this will work or if it will work, but I’m gonna just put some trust in it and we’ll see. It’s not quite according to the 30 Day Challenge Rules, but close enough.

Etana, I see what you mean now by no siggy–you mean the name/picture off to the side, huh? I’m sorry–I haven’t been putting my name at the bottom because I thought everybody could see the names.
So yes, I was the one who asked if you could get another opinion. I’m glad you’re getting another consult. Hopefully that dr will treat you more seriously.
ahhh…looks like the high sodium and no water could be the culprit behind your headaches. That would be my guess, anyway. Leigh said somewhere (FLTS? a podcast? some thread??) that when we go into a refeed or break week, we REALLY need to up the water because we’ll probably be increasing the sodium naturally.
Cynthia, that sounds like an interesting plan. Ouch about your poor ankles!! Be safe!
