Mixed relationships: For better or for worse

21 Dec

Where we last left off we were discussing the selection process of dating. Let’s assume now that you have chosen your mate. Be it marriage or a serious long term relationship, the person you are with now is settled into your life. What now?

Makeover that never was

Studies show that 74% of all relationships are entered into based on the hope of making large changes in the person that they are with. Meaning that from the get go the majority of people had a desire for an improvement for the person that they were with. Funny that the very thing that you wanted to improve on your partner (or them to you) isn’t what you think. 89% of the time the improvement that you want to make on your partner (or them to you) is the #1 thing that THEY complain about. If I asked you “If you could change one thing about your partner, what would it be?” how likely are you to give an answer of something that you know that want to change themselves? While people are judgmental, the truth always has been that the finger that points the hardest is towards ourselves.

Family feud results are in

What is the number one personal complaint about ourselves? Do I really need to tell you? You guessed it. In both men and women the number one complaint about ourselves is personal body composition. Men who gained weight were more likely to report marital problems than men who lost weight and they have a harder time dealing with it than women. However, men are twice as likely to have a problem with their partner being overweight. Goes to show you that the thing we are most insecure about with ourselves are what we are most critical of when it comes to others.

Honey, what did you get from the store today?

Women lead by a large margin in the department of food control. Women do the shopping, the cooking, and the food selection in the majority of households. Many studies have shown that women are triggered by more emotional behavioral eating and pulled more towards carbohydrates to stimulate a positive endorphin signaling in the brain. The problem is that the constant back and forth that occurs through the comfort eating process causing control issues and feeling of guilt. This leads to suppressing anger  towards their mate. Women more than men try to make up for their “failing” appearance and will power. In doing so it can lead towards allowing their counterpart to respect them less which can lead to a cascade of problems. On the flip side women are more verbal than men about their unhappiness with their weight thinking that men don’t care or are even proud of their loss of lean body. They try to please them with the food they buy, but guilt them for it later due to jealousy and personal doubt at the moment of change. Oh that tangle web we weave.

Change is Scary

At some point something clicks for one in the couple. Ideally it would be both, but it is usually rare that this occurs. The majority of you reading this now are here because you have a desire or a need to change your body composition. Getting the education is only half the battle. Let’s assume that now you know what it is that you have to do in order to achieve fat loss (because you bought the book right?) but applying that in real life is easier said than done. There are 3 main obstacles that the majority of you are going to have to deal with when you start dieting down. Hopefully these tips will help you get through them.

#1-They don’t like your food-

It is hard enough to re-teach your tastebuds when motivated but changing the tastebuds of those who aren’t. Your family may not like your food. They may hate your food. They want different food. They want you to make them pie, order a pizza, or keep those snacks around that you nibble on yourself. Yeah, try sticking to your calories when you have a large cheese pizza in from of you.

Solution?

They need to suck it up and help you. If you really care enough to change then it shouldn’t take a lifetime and they can deal with making it easier on you for a short time. If you don’t think you deserve it, it won’t go over well. If you don’t really want it, it won’t go over well. You need to be as dedicated to it as you hope they are. That is the first step. Now that you have that understood, I want to leave you with one more thing. If you really can’t go to your family and ask them for this help, then you may have found one of the reasons you went to food in the first place.

#2-Sabotage brought on by fear-

Is the wife complaining about you losing your softness? Is your boyfriend all the sudden bringing home fast food or making stuff he didn’t used to? Are you starting to get complaints about how you are changing or that you are cheating? This is nothing but a sad attempt of not allowing you to change because of what that change might mean.  A lot of people have a hard time understanding that you could be unhappy with an aspect of you life, but that doesn’t mean you want a completely different one.

Solution?

While they are being big babies it doesn’t matter, they are still scared. Your job, is to do the best you can to remind them, all the time, how much you love them. They need to know that you are doing this for yourself and so that you can be happier be with them. You need to assure them about your fears, really talk to them and let you know who you are. Remember people fear what they don’t understand.

#3-You do feel different, and you don’t know what that means

Sometimes when we finally gain a certain level of respect we realize that we made some bad decisions along the way. Sometimes that is in our job, sometimes it is in our friends, and sometimes it is in our partner. You aren’t going to find me on the camp of staying with someone because it is the right thing to do.  I have seen so much in my life and if it is one thing I know, it is that life is too beautiful to waste it just because it is the right thing to do.

Solution?

Try, try with all your might to grow with the person you are with. However, if they can’t grow with you, if they are bringing you down, then fly like a bird, fly far far away.

Final Thoughts:

Overall this experience to me has been such an amazing journey. Before this challenge I didn’t know who some of your were at all. To me that has been one of the coolest things of this whole challenge. The community that got built from it, our tribe that got created out of virtual thin air.

At the end of the day we all came together in support of one another and decreased some fat and carried away a lot more pride. Now this is nothing against some other online challenges but you don’t see these kinds of results anywhere in 30 days. Usually the 12 weeks challenges can’t even compare to what we have seen here. It is inspiring. I have the best readers in the world and i could not be prouder.

Overall it has been 151 pounds lost. That is 151 dollars that goes to St Jude Hospital! If you would like to make a donation yourself please go here to do so.

Thank you, everyone.

*Pumps up Europe Jam*

First, we talked about what calories look like.

We also talked about how much of a role weighing and measuring can play in results.

Then, we talked about the role that restaurants take in being correct in their calorie amounts.

I want to bring it all together by going back to the beginning and giving you a little except from The Fat Loss Troubleshoot on what a calorie is. How many of you actually know what a calorie is and means?

Excerpt From The Fat Loss Troubleshoot:

A Calorie Is A What?

How many calories do you burn just trying to understand what a calorie is?

A calorie is a unit of energy. More specifically, it’s the amount of energy/heat it takes to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit). It is most often used to access the energy content of food, though it can measure other amounts of energy in chemistry. Food calories are represented by a capital C and are 1000 times bigger than one physicist’s calorie (spelled with a small c). On a nutrition label, it will appear as “cals” or “Kcal.”

Nutritionists measure the energy content of food in calories with an apparatus known as the calorimeter. It is a device that measures the heat of chemical reactions, physical changes, and heat capacity. Basically, some guys in a lab coat spends his time blowing up your food in a metal container mixed with water and powder. The higher the temperature of that water and metal, the more energy (calories) is in the food. This is as basic as it gets for an explanation, but the process isn’t that complicated. You can even find easy instructions online for making your own calorimeter.

All of this boiling has delivered to us the knowledge of the grams-to-calorie ratio based on different macronutrients. When 1 pound of water is raised 4 degrees Fahrenheit, the amount of heat used is chosen as the unit of heat, and is called the Calorie. How that energy burns in your body is the equivalent to this technique and from it we can derive this:

1 gram of Carbohydrates burned =4 Calories
1 gram of Protein burned =4 Calories
1 gram of Fat burned =9 calories
1 gram of Alcohol burned =7 Calories

Using this formula, if all you have is the gram amounts for your food item, you can figure up the caloric amount on your own.

For example 2 tbsp (30 grams) of Natural Peanut Butter has:

  • 16 grams of Fat
  • 6 grams of Carbohydrates
  • 8 grams of Protein

This translates to this using our formula:

16 Grams of Fat =16 x 9 =144
6 Grams o Carb =6 x 4 =24
8 Grams of Protein =8 x 4 =32

Add those totals together and you get 144 + 24 + 32 =200 Calories for every 2 tbsp or (30 grams) of Peanut Butter.

What Your Body Does With Those Calories

I am going to provide you the case of the professor and the burning peanut.

Professor George Benedek burned a peanut. He stood in the front of a small class of 50 students, took out a peanut on a wire made from a paper clip and held it with pliers. In doing so he positioned the peanut under a test tube which contained ten grams of water.

Beneath the peanut was a large pan filled with water. Nearby, he had a fire extinguisher, just in case.

Benedek proceeded to set the peanut on fire. Drops of oil dripped from the nut and into the pan of water. The water in the test tube started to boil. When the peanut finally burned out, there were only eight grams of water left.

When you eat a peanut your body does the same sort of thing. It converts the energy stored in the peanut into the energy it needs to keep running. Different calories do different things and, as much as argued, a calorie isn’t just a calorie. Your body has certain processes and demands that require different supplies of calories. It’s important that you keep this in mind not just in fat loss but life in general. Look at food as a source of energy, a means to provide you with function and life. Sure, function and life can be tasty, but just make sure it’s tasty energy that you are going to put to use.

A question to my blog readers:

How important do you think calories are to your fat loss? How much “room” do we have to be wrong? What kind of “compliance” level do we have to reach?

Do you really have to count calories?

If you know the answer then why do you ignore the truth to that answer?

If you don’t know the answer then what are you waiting for, get some truth in your life!

Do you REALLY know what calories you are getting eating out?

Restaurants make a boo-boo.

A client of mine sent me a fantastic article on restaurant calories. This isn’t just another article about how shocking it is that there are 2900 calories in a serving of fries. For a good article on that though check out this article here at Men’s Health.

http://www.menshealth.com/20worst/worstfood.html

No, this article was REALLY awesome because they took the food that had a nutrition guide list of the calories that it had, went and tested it, and got the REAL results.

In some cases it was obvious that it was a little extra sprinkle of this here or there. However, some meals were off by over 500 calories.

This just reaffirms why to NEVER put your hard work and results in the hands of someone else.

You will also find it funny that some of the biggest ones off are the “guiltless or skinny” selections.

Check out the article here: http://www.abc2news.com/content/themenutest/story.aspx?content_id=c40e7a71-d186-4fce-85c3-2eb0f2973118

Leigh, Do you even train people?

07 Jun

Q: Dear Leigh,

I have been following some of your personal clients logs. Seems to me that you are anti- training, what is up with that? Do you even train people at all?

(Signed Jerk in Arizona…okay maybe they didn’t sign it that)

(edit: Oh and for the record they did sign it “being a jackass” and found the post funny.)

DON’T TAKE THIS ALL SO SERIOUS! My next article is “How a deficit takes away your funny bone.” ;)

A: Dear Jerk in Arizona,

I do see where someone is coming from if they read the logs over at somewhere like JP.

First off, each training program is 100% unique to the other. So no two programs are the same. That doesn’t mean that sometimes they can’t follow the same kind of base. Why though (and this is a great question) are so many of my clients (online) not doing a lot of aggressive training.

The truth is that I have a kind of “following” and “type” of client that I generally work with. Usually, by the time you come to me, you have already been driving yourself into the ground or training so aggressively that the best thing I can do for YOU is to let you take a break!

Remember fat loss has nothing to do with training. That being said, I love muscle mass. I love increasing lean body mass.

That doesn’t mean that fat loss is always done at the right time.
That doesn’t mean that aggressive training fits your body look needs (IE: Actress/Model)
That doesn’t mean that training too much won’t make you more hungry or lead to binging.
That doesn’t mean that you have the right hormone system for lots of lifting AND lots of dieting down.

There are too many variables and it just so happens that a lot of my clients (those that you see, anyways) fall into some of those categories where training on an aggressive and sometimes ANY level is what they need.

Not all my clients have a public log, but some may just be in the public eye and DO training for athletics. The truth is, if you are seeing a client run a log, they are more my passion than my “clients.” I am not saying it’s free, I am just saying it’s a personal love to help them and it goes beyond just getting my technical duties done. It goes beyond just being a technical trainer. I love these people and I don’t do it for me, I do it for them and VICE VERSA. They are amazing people to me, and I am not going to let my need of implementing some new “technique” on them ruin their efforts because it doesn’t seem like that are “doing enough”.

All you trainers out there remember: your ego can kill your clients’ results.

End Point: Don’t assume so much, you make a ass out of…well in this case, U only.
