Whatever tomorrow brings I’ll be there…

I love update posts. I think I love them so much because they remind me that I am actually getting somewhere in life and doing things. Sometimes the days just travel by so fast it is nice to sit back and ask “what the hell is going on in my life right now?”

The answer is…

1. I am now the official co-host along with Jonathan “studmuffin” Fass on The Fitcast. Kevin, Tony, and Brian have done a really great job at throwing together a great exercise database too so go check it out here.

This means if you have any questions you want me to answer, head here. It is going to be a little longer on my podcasts, so this is the best way get an audio answer right now.

2. I was a “Expert Profile” feature for Precision Nutrition site and did a “Day in the Life.” It was fun, I snapped some pictures, and overall found out I am really boring right now. Check it out!

3. FLzine.com will be launching March 1st. I have a LOT more to tell you about as far as this is concerned, but I am going to save that for another post. For now, just know, I am freaking awesome.

4. Ryan Viers (one of my former clients) launched up a great new site called “LifeGawker.” An awesome idea and a positive way to spend you video watching time. Go check it out.

5. The Fat Loss Troubleshoot is still going strong and the word is getting around well. Last checked # 6 in nutrition and #12 in Diet.  I can’t thank everyone enough for their support and I hope you take the time to chat with me sometime either here, on twitter, or facebook. I am limiting myself to three of these things only because I am just too much of a goof to keep up with the rest.

So what’s been going on with you? I need some updates!

Looking for writers/workers for new site

Most of you involved have already gotten emails about writing request and assignments. If you haven’t and you think you should have, seriously, email me. I likely sent it to you, but it got lost in your spam filters or that place where socks go.

There are going to be articles and interviews on this site from Alan Aragon, Mike Robertson, and Jamie Hale, just to name a few. There is also going to be a truck load of work from people who you have never heard of, and those who like to express their views and research they have found.

In short, it is going to be spectacular and I feel that to some degree my work online over these years has come to what this site is going to be. It is going to be big and best of all, free source knowledge.

Some people have asked “What is going to happen to your blog?” Personally, I see no need to change it. In fact, I am sure it will just get better. I would like to use it more and more for relaying more personal experiences, client work, and my life activities. I have a lot of dreams, I do a lot of fun things, and I love making friends with all of you. In a non-nerd way cause that came out kinda of nerdy.

This site is still going to be here, that wont change. The content, who the hell knows what I am going to do in the future. For now, especially until the new site launch, it will still be largely fat loss and research based stuff.

Writers

Here is what I am looking for, and how to submit your material if you want to be a contributor.

  • Original or revised/updated material.
  • Interesting topics/material. I don’t need a “How to get a six pack” article. I want a unique outlook and view with your material.
  • Quality researched material. Don’t think about handing me questionable or hearsay data. You CAN write an opinion/rant or anecdotal based article, just label it as such.
  • Your topic can be on anything health/fitness related. From Oly to supplements. From Dr. phil to Gray Cook, I don’t care what your topic is, but it needs to fit in the area of health and fitness or the business of professionals.  Beware and smart if the later ;)
  • No censorship on topic or discussion. If you have been wanting to say your piece to the fitness world, and have a bigger audience to do it with, then this is your chance.

This site is going to be a pretty big deal. The people I am working with and the power behind it is going to lead to a new level. What will make it so great is having the reader be apart of it as much as possible.

Moderators

Currently right now I am looking for forum moderators for the new sites forum. The actual forum is still under construction, but will be launched with the site. Beyond just being a moderator you will also be responsible to getting the word out about the site and basically be a big support team for the members and the readers. It doesn’t pay and it will likely lead to much frustration with the human race at times. However, it is highly rewarding. I have personally been a moderator of 6 forums in my lifetime. Not all of them were fitness related of course.  I can say that I have seen forums grow, and I have seen them die. It is tough creating a thriving community. You need to have a love for it to work, but a soft hand to let freedom of thought reign.  Here are the current forum rules, and it will likely stay this way.

The rules of the forum:

1-No spam
-You will be removed.
2-No Active/Creative Spamming-Meaning that you joined here just to spam us, but are smarter about it. We know the difference. You will be removed.
3-No Porn-Sorry, but no porn allowed here folks.
4-No trolls or bigoted morons-If someone is here just to start trouble, is stupid, or being racist, homophobic, sexiest, or any other of that BS, you will be removed.
5-Try to play nice in the “general” areas-There are areas in which you can be as blunt as you want to. That is fine. However, in the general sections treat people with respect. You can argue, but do it with respect and intelligence. Try and use concrete data to back your arguments, not “I know you are, but what am I?”
6-Keep the correct topics in the correct sections-I realize that sometimes things blend over, that is fine. However, if you start talking about kinky sex positions in the mobility section, I am moving you.

Qualification for Mods:

  • Cool head. If you get overly heated and can’t get over yourself to keep a situation calm, don’t apply. Sometimes you have to swallow a little pride and anger to be a mod.
  • Understanding of basic message board functions. You don’t have to be a wiz at the internet, but understanding how to post pictures, edit posts, and work with basic forum functions is needed.
  • Not Easily Offended. Sometimes being a mod means seeing things or erasing things you might be sensitive too. This is also going to be a pretty colorful forum, I can tell already. That doesn’t mean it will be negative or mean, nor crude of disrespectful. Still, if you can’t take a joke or are on PC overload, this might not be the place for you. Understand I respect all walks of life, I just make fun of them equally.
  • Having the ability to set aside political and religious beliefs and accept others. In short, there will be Republicans, Dems, Christian, Buddhist, etc. If you can’t handle diversity, not for you.
  • Being able to play nice with others. Mods live behind “closed doors” and are bound together by the job they keep. It should be a way to get closer to each other and learn more about your fellow peeps. However, sometimes people just can’t play nice with others. No big deal, but no need to apply if that is the case.

To apply to be a mod, simple send a brief background of who you are, what you have to offer, and why you are better than others. In short, be interesting. Send it through the contact form here or to email address here.

The Home Stretch-Challenge Update

Well here we are, in the home stretch.

This has been a CRAZY couple of weeks. This is officially the start of the last 8 days of the challenge! Our next check in will be the final check in on Sunday (though technically my crew will be on Saturday so I can get their pictures up).

You know I have to admit, I thought my crew was going to freak out a little with the re-feed. I was nervous that the slight increase in weight was going to scare them. Not only did it not scare them, they drove right through it and used it to make it out of this week. The numbers are still dropping, the pictures are still shocking, and I couldn’t be prouder.

Like a true tease this week I am going to leave you to wonder just how good they are doing, but will still provide mouth watering food porn. I threw in a little of my own at the end.

“Dear Leigh, I have lost the will, please forgive me.”

I got this email on Tuesday. Do you know what I got on Friday?

“Dear Leigh, I am down 2 pounds lower that the start of the week and back on track. Thanks!”

“None are so old as those who have outlived enthusiasm.”

Enthusiasm is key for holding on. Keeping yourself and those around you inspired amd positive is a big drive in all of this. Take Jim for example, he has inspired a leauge of friends and co-workers to change their lives for the better. Enthusiasm should be infectious, it should invade every part of your lives right now. You have decided to change and for the better, that is amazing! Who cares if you slipped up, you can still come through for the homestretch. You don’t have to give way to lost enthusiasm.

For those of you that have it and them some, thank you for sharing it with the others. This whole challenge has shown very clearly that it isn’t about some crazy program, it is about the family that helps you get through it.

This weeks assisgnment is to be the voice of enthsiasm to someone who needs it. Be it fat loss, work, or friendship. Go that extra mile and give a extra congratulations to encourage them on their road.

First off, I know things have been a bit slow this week. No, I have not been cooling my feet on a ocean floor, not yet anyway. I have been dealing with some technical stuff and hiring some more help around here. Yes, this is officially a growing company. It is all your fault!

I need a mid-week update from everyone in the challenge right now. I don’t usually harass people mid week but this is a crucial stage. I need you to answer the following questions and I am sending this to my crew as well…

-How does it feel to have a little over a week to go?

Hi Leigh

I just listened to your response to my question about birthday cake and loose skin. Thanks for responding!

Since you asked for a little bit more info about me, here goes!

I started to get overweight around the age of 6 due to my mum always feeding me when I wasn’t hungry. At the age of 12, I got conscious of my weight so I started dieting. I dieted pretty much non stop until I was 18. I gained 20 – 30kg (onto my already slightly overweight frame) up until the age of 20. I then lost all the weight and at the age of 21 was at my goal weight. To maintain this weight, I was only able to eat small amounts. After a horrible break up, I gained 50kg over the course of a year. Eating was the only thing that made me happy (a broken heart can do that to you!). Probably because I had been depriving myself for so long, it felt good to eat.

I was binge eating a lot! In between binges though, I was not eating anything for 1 day to 2 weeks at a time. I felt too impatient to watch the weight go down slowly which led me to fast so extremely. I was (and still am) so sad about the body I’ve lost.

I felt like I had to do the metabolic repair program because all of my other diets just didn’t work this time around.

I was so concerned about loose skin because I have lost, gained, lost, gained and am now losing again.

Do you think the metabolic repair program isn’t suitable??

I love how you’re helping all these people Leigh! You must have a great heart!

LEIGH, YOU ARE AWESOME!!
Is there a section that has specs on the fat loss challenge?? I did not hear that Oct. 20 till like the 27th.(missed getting on-line to your site/podcasts at the wrong time!)  I’m sure you are going to do another challenge but I am I want/need to know person Thank you much for your continued support…

Also one last thing…

I was dieting down from Sept 8 to Oct 8 rather diligently- 1300-1500 and saw a 4Lb./ 7in. cumulative drop was feeling good  than my menses came and I have been off track ever since and real hungry. No real gains, but certainly no more losses have been achieved :( I want to get back on track. I still have more to go… can I just hop back on board and expect results as I achieve deficit or do I need to be at higher intake again to start a new go at it again later on?

Also what types of standing-vertical stability work do you suggest for abs and glutes
I hear that this type of work is more effective than traditional lye down methods. I currently am definitely at a loss for ab work but as I lose fat can begin to feel the definition is there and would like to encourage more

Janice Question #3 (Regarding Metabolic Repair Program)

I got the book Rules of lifting for women, and saw on one of their forums some kind of challenge about eating all your calories at once or something like that, there was a link to you. I have been dieting on and off for 19yrs amongst other avenues of keeping the weight off, lipo, binge/purge, diet pills, excessive exercising the list goes on and on. I never really stuck with weightlifting I was all about the cardio, and even fellow gym members would comment on the intensity at which I worked out. All the while eating, usually a bar for breakfast , a salad for lunch , maybe another smaller bar and Frozen yogurt for dinner,Then after getting frustrated that I look the same or weigh the same, I say SCREW IT and eat everything in sight. I am fatter than ever.!!!!!!!!

I need to start from scratch and since re-birth is not an option, I feel this resetting of my metabolism is the best I’ve got!!!!

All I was asking was; “Is 1075 cals going to screw me up (if that’s even possible) and was I calculating correctly”.??!
And some of the prepare moves were unfamiliar to me, how does the average Joe prepare if they don’t know what to do or gym or workout lingo??!
Also how do you find the caloric values of food so that during the REST period or any stage, you can make sure you are staying within the calorie allowance??!
One last thing will it work if I eat protein bars or shakes as part of my calories, otherwise I’m not sure how to calculate my food!!!

I am really not this retarded when it comes to things but I am very nervous to give up exercise for 3 weeks.

A Child Can Ask Questions That a Wise Man Cannot Answer…

When I was little, until around 10 years old or so, I had nose bleeds almost everyday. I had a birth defect that made my nose do something strange. The truth is I never knew why, the doctors never knew why. I am not talking a little blood on the tip of a tissue here. I am talking massive soaking on multiple tissues. The docs said that I had to “let it come out”, that it was so much and that “something” was draining so I couldn’t “clog” it. So every day I would usually sit at a toilet for a hour and just let it drain, drip by drip, until done.

My teachers understood the “let it drain” aspect of it, however, every once in a while a “new adult” would come around and be in the presence of these gushers. They would proceed to try and tilt my head back to stop it from flowing out. I would fight them and tell them, while almost dying and choking, that “it has to drain!” They would never believe me until another adult came along and said that what I was saying was correct. By that time my Punky Brewster shoes were covered and I was a pissed off little kid.

I believe this was one of the beginning reasons as to why I grew up thinking that adults were stupid and that I was smarter than they were. It also instilled to me that authority and social proof were more important that the common sense teachings of a child. It was then I knew that I was on my own and left to fend for myself. When I would get a nose bleed around strangers I would take off running, not out of embarrassment like they must have thought, but out of protection of their stupidity.

Fast forward to now…

Now when I go to the doctor office for something (rare and only if really really needed) they hurt me, usually don’t know what they are doing, and still will not listen to the common sense of the person who “lacks a clear authority.” Let me state here and now, that this is why I am who I am and I do what I do. I do not like to think that I have to depend on uneducated person to help me help myself. When at all possible I try to answer my own questions. When at all possible I “run” from the stranger that is trying to fix a problem the wrong way that I know how to fix the right way. It is NOT being cocky, it is self preservation. It is NOT being paranoid, it is being educated. With that being said, not everyone has the time or the ability to do that.

No problem, allow me please.

I will do the best I can to be an “authority” that listens to what you have to say. I will do the best I can to be a “leader” that guides you to the answer and how to find it, not just expect you to believe me. I will do the best I can to not be that stupid substitute teacher that tried to hold my head upside down as I was telling her the answer to my problem. Keep sending in your questions, the “doctor” is in.

I’ve read Alan’s Girth Control, Tom’s Burn the fat, endless articles and forums and I’ve never read anything related to the hormonal aspect of weight loss for women, it has been mostly about deficits and other thermodynamics laws. My period has been very unstable since the weight loss, and tends to disappear for months then suddenly come back. According to my blood tests only, my doctor said I have PCOS (or PCO) and I should take birth control pills. She said this has nothing to do with my weight loss and that it is a born syndrome with no real cure. I am very concerned about this issue since I’m afraid I somehow messed up with my female hormones!

Do you know of any relation between PCO appearing after a big weight loss? Could the loss of period be caused by anything else besides PCO? I’m not a doctor but my blood test kind of seems alright to me and I suspect it is just the doctor’s default answer to period being irregular… My weight loss was done through a pretty drastic deficit, combined with resistance training and cardio.

Do any of your books talk about hormones issues? I’d definitely buy a book that’d shed some light over this topic I really agree with your realistic approach to fat loss and how you emphasize the body & mind connection in the process, oh and your videos are priceless, you always make me laugh :)

Hi,

I have been listening to the fitcast and you seem to be up on nutrition, duhh, I have a question that has been bugging me.

Although I am not vegetarian I have been interested in varying my protein sources but combining protein chains for veggie sources is perplexing me, as you will see below.

I am looking into combining grain/nut/legume into full branch chains for protein. I have found loads of combinations (lentils and oats is my favorite at the moment, ends up like a savory pottage). However vegetarian websites don’t seem to mention if you sum the protein from each source or divide. To clarify here’s an example:

Total Protein (read from nutritional info on packets):

(A)
100g lentils + 50g oats = 26g + 6g = 32g protein

(B)
100g lentils + 50g oats = 6 + 6 = 12g protein

(C)
100g lentils + 50g oats = 6/2 + 6/2 = 6g protein

As you can see option (A) assumes that the amino acids to combine to create a larger more complete chain so you get more protein. Option (B) assumes that since the Oats only have 6g protein only 6g of protein can be utilized from the lentils to create a larger chain. Option (C) assumes that rather summation the aminos “interweave” so in fact you only get 6g of “full” protein.

I am not a veggie. I normally have 1-2 scopes of whey, 1 fish, and 1 chicken/mince portion a day so I am getting full branch chains elsewhere. I was just wondering how to process vegetarian combinations.

Hi Leigh,

It’s possible I may need some modifications during the re-feed (diabetes). I can handle insulin adjustments and sugars just fine but would prefer to set it up in such a way as to avoid wild swings if possible as then I just feel like crap. Anyway I would love your thoughts on that rather than me just winging it myself. On the other hand it’s just one day so maybe just leave well enough alone. And I perfectly understand just fine if you don’t want to get into it being as this is a medical condition we’re talking about here.

Just want to say first and foremost keep up the great work! I finally bought your book The Fat Loss Troubleshoot and have already skimmed over most of it :) An audio version would be a great compliment to it. It would be great for people such as myself who have the attention span of a circus monkey and would benefit from listening either on the job or at the gym. Your awesome personality during your audio works make it enjoyable to listen to, and learn a great deal at the same time, you sound like a person that would be fun to throw back some beers with.

But this message isn’t entirely intended to kiss your ass, but you do deserve some major kudos.

Yes I feel great, and I’m doing all kinds of nifty little things I couldn’t do before such as a pull up and now 20 push ups! I really love the physical aspect, and new found confidence in my physical abilities and I look good in clothes

Alas…Seeing myself naked is something that happens on a daily basis, and it is something I think about every day, as I slowly run out of bodyfat to train off.

Frankly the thought of invasive surgery and anesthesia scare the shit out of me. I briefly recall heard something about the anti-aging crowd using HGH to look younger or something along those lines, maybe even Testosterone. Maybe you know someone via your connections that might have experience with this taboo subject?

I want to reinforce that I’m not looking for a quick fix. Diet and exercise has been my staple and I pride myself and transforming with hard work, and the couple uses of Hot Rox extreme. I’m just a pussy when it comes to having pieces of me cut off and removed :)

Every week I am going to give my subscribers an update on things in general and give them the new password to the subscribers section in my blog. In there lies the secrets to all of life’s problems…or just some cook stuff you might find useful on your fat loss journey.

This week is the start of the audio series I am going to be doing each week. Usually it will be a 3 to 6 minute audio on various topics about fat loss, diet, and more. I will also be updating it with articles and other extras as well.

This week will be the start of the “Make My Body Hot” series where I will discuss how to train for the body you actually want. It’s a topic I will be covering this weekend in detail at a speaking engagement but you lucky people get it here for free.
